REAL English

Course Aim:

The course is designed for advanced students who are looking for a more innovative approach to English and are interested in mastering the language of their generation. Non-standard, contemporary English is taught and practised in REAL contexts and situations. The unique course content and focus makes it a fantastic experience.

Pre-requisites:  REAL_english

Students are required to have an Advanced level of English

Duration:

4-12 weeks

Course Work:

Because ‘street language’ is spoken more than written, the emphasis is on listening and speaking rather than reading and writing. Excursions and activities are a large part of the course work and some examples of the themes that will be explored include:

  • Language used in popular songs and the music industry
  • Advertising language & rule breaking
  • Street language
  • Language in socialising and romancing
  • Humour in serials & movies
  • Rapid speech between natives
  • Storytelling – relating past events & emotions
  • Nuance & subtleties
  • Swearing & insulting language
  • Nightclubbing & drug culture terminology
  • Computer language
  • Rules v Usage

Assessments:

Students are formally tested every Monday on the prior week’s work. Speaking and Listening are assessed informally during class.

Completion:

Students are assessed in two dimensions. One is their performance on the content tested every Monday. The other is their classroom performance – their ability to keep up with the class (passive listening & reading skills), to contribute (active speaking & writing skills), and to perform appropriately outside of the classroom with homework and social interaction. Graduates receive a CTIC certificate on completion of the course.
